Unfolding the choreographer's body: the invention of the dance dramaturge
In Europe, dramaturgy is the new dance profession at the end of the 1990s. Such a rapid emergence and specialization of a "job" that was virtually non-existent a decade ago needs some investigation. What has changed in the choreographic practices of the 1990s that led to the need of dance dramaturges? What is being asked of these choreographers' doubles? What exactly constitutes dramaturgy?
How can one systematize dramaturgic methodologies since the process of dramaturgy seems so inextricably bound to complicities, to privileged relationships? What is the relationship between dramaturging, directing and criticism? We will investigate dramaturgy in its several aspects: ideological, commercial, critical, dialogical. We will then discuss the studio work of dance dramaturgy, and explore new possibilities for its practice and for its theory.
The seminar will involve the viewing of selected festival performances, as well as videos of recent dance works by various choreographers.
