"sans" approaches pure dance and movement - no set, no music, no light design - with a humorous touch. The dancers play with the audience's expectations, explore the performers' presence and the transitions from one situation to the next on a bare, silent stage. What role such concepts as "veracity," "artificiality," and "authenticity" have in a theatrical context? Through movement, Martine Pisani and her company offer playful resistance to facile psychology and dramatization.

Martine Pisani began her career in the 1980s as a dancer, studying contemporary dance with David Gordon, Yvonne Rainer, and Odile Duboc, among others. She has been practicing Tai Chi with Pierre Lapébie since 1987. For several years, Martine Pisani danced in the group, Dunes, along with Madeleine Chiche and Bernard Misrachi, before founding her own group, La compagnie du solitaire, in 1992.
