In this series of classes we will begin by focusing on various parts of the anatomy: base of the feet, perineum, crown, navel, etc. With stillness, breathing techniques and simple repetitive movement we will heighten our connection to the subtle energy of the body. Because every person will access this awareness differently, exercises will be drawn from a broad range of disciplines. Each class will move toward a study of a particular type or location of energy. Initiation sequences (short phrases) will be explored in many different ways. In the class, each dancer will creatively deepen her/his awareness of the body and maintain that awareness while moving through space. We will move toward subtlety and power with the kind of centeredness that allows for profound tranquillity, slippery geometries, screaming rage or whatever each participant can be encouraged to develop.
Since 1986 Dennis OConnor has been a dancer with, among others, Merce Cunningham, Yves Musard and Michael Laub. His own choreographies have been shown in New York and throughout Europe since 1990. The New York Times has called him "one of the best dancers today" and his work has been described as "music for open eyes unmediated by explanation." Over the past twenty years, Dennis OConnor has studied chi kung, yoga, taoist meditation and related body arts and been chi kung teaching-assistant to acupuncturist Dr. W. Chen. He is also certified to teach by Taoist Master Mantak Chia. In his varied work as a dance artist he is most interested in movement initiated from internal and meridian energy initiations and in building a dance-theater of the body that grows from and gives context to these energies. |
