During this workshop, participants will be asked to create their own dance material. We will work on this material using a system of five fundamental theater functions which can be conveyed both on a physical and a verbal level. Groups of five participants will go through these various functions in turn. For example, the material from the function designated "original" could consist of individual movements, culturally influenced intensities, and individual artistic approaches, and of both simple and complex elements. Each function influences the entirety of artistic actions; the original material is transformed with each reworking, while still remaining recognizable throughout. The constituting context of identifiable people and functions makes it possible to follow the process of transformation and to exchange ideas in working together.

Thomas Lehmen studied at the S.N.D.O. Amsterdam; "EXTENDED VERSION" (1997), "friendly fire", and "No Fear" (both 1998) were the first projects he presented. These were followed by the solo piece "distanzlos" (1999), and a piece for three dancers, "mono subjects", which premiered at the Podewil in Berlin in 2001. In 2002 he presented the piece "Schreibstück" and published the book of the same name (ISBN 3-00-009996-4). Lehmen will begin a residency at Zeche Zollverein in Essen in the fall of this year. He has been presenting his work on an international scale since 1998 and his residencies have included stays in Bergen, Tallinn, Hong Kong, Lancaster, Lisbon, and Rio de Janeiro, among others.

Thomas Lehmen is artist-in-residence at Podewil and TanzWerkstatt Berlin since 2001.
