This workshop proposes working critically and practically on the question of the ethics of performance in its relation to political responsibility. Its main question is: How to remain responsible as critics, public, and practitioners to the calling of art as a practice uniting action and reflection? We will focus particularly on the appeal of dance as critical project. Utopian/political/philosophical texts that take "dance" and "movement" as tropes for social and critical thinking will be probed theoretically and practically. We will read a few texts: Derrida and Deleuze and Guattari in philosophy; Randy Martin and Mark Franko in dance studies; José Gil and Suely Rolnik on the philosophy of performance. We will view some central pieces in contemporary dance and performance art and reflect also on the performances actually presented in the festival.

André Lepecki is a dance critic and dramaturgist. He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University.
